Women in Tea and Coffee

Tea & Coffee Trade Journal held its inaugural Women in Tea and Coffee conference in central London.

The day was a resounding success, with all the delegates praising the inspiring keynote speakers, panel discussions on sustainability and careers, tea and coffee demonstrations, speed networking sessions and drinks reception.

The positive energy and enthusiasm throughout the day highlighted the importance of celebrating and empowering women in the industry.

For almost two decades, Shabnam Weber owned and operated her own tea company in Toronto, Canada. With retail stores and a wholesale business, her company was one of the first of its kind in Toronto. Her passion and love of tea led her to become involved with the Tea and Herbal Association of Canada as a director, sitting on several committees, most notably the Education Committee where she wrote the Tea Sommelier® program. Weber has been president of the Tea and Herbal Association of Canada since 2018 and has transformed the association through the programs and resources it offers members and has become an industry leader.

Chief Executive, UK Tea & Infusions Association

Dr Sharon Hall is Chief Executive of the UK Tea & Infusions Association (UKTIA), a role she took on in 2018. Dr Hall is also President of Tea & Herbal Infusions Europe (THIE), chairs THIE’s EU Green Deal Steering Group, and the Plastics & Packaging Working Group, and represents THIE on environmental and sustainability matters at FoodDrinkEurope. Dr Hall had the honour of chairing of the United Nations, FAO-Intergovernmental Group on Tea (2022-2024) and now co-chairs the IGG-Tea Sustainability Pillar with Kenya. Dr Hall has also worked directly with farmers, experiencing first-hand the challenges within supply chains. She firmly believes that collaborative working within a sector can create opportunities to enhance value and sustainability.

Ana has been working in the coffee business for over 26 years, in a mix of roles on the commercial/trading side and on research. Over the last 11 years, she has been Neumann Kaffee Gruppe (NKG)’s global Head of Research, formulating and maintaining a global coffee supply/demand balance and providing analysis of the coffee market to sister NKG companies. Ana is from Brazil but has lived in the UK most of her adult life. She has a BA in Economics, Politics and Philosophy from Oxford University, UK.

Vanúsia Nogueira comes from a family of coffee producers, and started her career at PwC Consulting, where she was a partner and worked for 15 years. She started working directly with coffee in 2002, always focusing on niche markets. She served as executive director at BSCA from 2007 through April 2022 and took over as Executive Director at the International Coffee Organization in May 2022. Vanúsia holds a PhD in Administration/Marketing from Rosario National University in Argentina, a BS in Systems Engineering and Administration from Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ) and MBAs and post-MBA focusing on Management, Marketing and Advanced Project Management from Fundação Getúlio Vargas in Rio de Janeiro.

Suzanne Giele is a social impact leader with broad experience at the intersection of business, sustainability and impact in the international FMCG sector. She specializes in ESG strategy setting, strategic stakeholder engagement and partnership development in agricultural supply chains, with a focus on Africa.

Starting her career in commercial roles, she transitioned to sustainability and social impact, leveraging business as a force for good. Previously leading the Heineken Africa Foundation, she currently heads the social impact and human rights agenda for LIPTON Teas and Infusions, advancing HRDD, living wages and gender equity.

Keely also works to ensure Lincoln & York’s progress and innovations in sustainability are effectively communicated in ways which work to support sustainability efforts across the wider industry. This includes working closely with organisations such as World Coffee Research to ensure that businesses and organisations are aware of the vital work taking place to protect the future of high-quality coffee and fair outcomes for farmers and suppliers.

Dilara’s journey in the coffee industry began nearly a decade ago as a barista at a local specialty roastery in her hometown, where she quickly took the lead on local and regional sustainability projects.

Her passion for ethical sourcing deepened through her dissertation on direct trade in the coffee sector, inspiring her to pursue a master’s degree in sustainability management. Alongside her work in coffee, she has contributed as a freelance journalist to national newspapers in the UK.

Today, Dilara brings together her expertise in sustainability and communication as the Partnerships and Communication Manager at 4C Services, a leading sustainability certification system in coffee, now expanding its efforts in cocoa.

Katrina Farmer

Katrina is a passionate marketeer and champion of sustainability – with extensive experience across the FMCG and travel sectors, and over 20 years working for Fairtrade brands.

 

With 14+ years under her belt at Ecotone UK – which owns Clipper Teas and Kallo – Katrina has been instrumental in driving both brand and business growth on a global scale.

Her role as European Category Manager for Hot Beverages focuses on driving continued growth and innovation for the Clipper brand across multiple markets. But working for Clipper means something deeper: it’s about using her passion and enthusiasm for making a difference in developing countries to support the brand’s Fairtrade partnership – ultimately bringing consumers on the journey to make positive change to communities in tea-growing countries.

Executive Advisor and Tea Ambassador, ITO EN-North America

Rona Tison is currently the executive advisor and tea ambassador for ITO EN-North America. The parent company, ITO EN, based in Tokyo, is Japan’s #1 green tea brand and the world’s leading purveyor of premium and sustainably grown green tea and healthy beverages. A tea industry connoisseur with a refined approach to the US Japanese culture and innovative marketing, Tison started her career in the hospitality industry while attending University of California, Berkeley.

Fluent in Japanese, she worked as a tour guide for Japan Airline Tours (JALPAK) while in college. Tison embarked on her hospitality career at the San Francisco Hilton in the tour and travel sales department and later became catering manager. In 1985, she helped launch Air France’s Le Meridien Hotel in San Francisco as the assistant manager. Transferred to Le Parker Meridien in New York City in 1985, she oversaw the front of the house as front desk and assistant manager. Tison later joined Starwood Hotels as director of operations and public relations to open two W Hotels in New York City.

While working at the Parker Meridien in New York City, she was scouted to launch a four-floor lifestyle store, FELISSIMO, off 5th Avenue. During this time as managing director, Tison oversaw retail operations and the tearoom, which included various collaborations with UNESCO, the James Beard House, and New York Magazine.

In 2002, she joined ITO EN as executive vice president of public relations to help launch the company’s first flagship store in the United States and restaurant on Madison Avenue. The tea store subsequently was rated Top Tea Store for nine years in Zagat’s Marketplace with the restaurant, KAI, regarded as a Japanese culinary destination.

Being half Japanese and half American, she has a true passion and appreciation for the culture of traditional and modern cuisines, with a global approach to Japanese tea and cuisine.

With her seasoned tea and hospitality experience, Tison received the 2017 John Harney Lifetime Achievement Award at the World Tea Expo for her educational contributions to the tea industry, the first woman to ever receive this prestigious award.

She has been a speaker at the Smithsonian Lecture Series in Washington, DC, at the United Nations in New York City, and showcased Japanese teas at the Flavors of Japan event at the Culinary Institute of Napa Valley in California with 50 Japanese visiting Chefs. Tison has also participated in the Shizuoka Tea Festival and in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Northwest Tea Festival.

In addition to her role at ITO EN, Tison serves on the Board of the Tea Association of the USA and the Tea & Health Committee, the US-Japan Council, the Advisory Board of the Global Tea Initiative at University of California, Davis, and is a member of the Tea & Herbal Association of Canada.

Anke Erichsen’s path in coffee started in 2003 as marketing director of Mahlkönig and later the HEMRO-Group, followed by eight years as managing director of Orang Utan Coffee. Over these years working in the global coffee industry and as member of the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe /Specialty Coffee Association Events Committee for several years, she connected with many interesting people and accompanied the tremendous growth of the specialty coffee industry.

Erichsen is currently a partner of Hamburg, Germany-based, UBE Erichsen Beteiligungs GmbH, a family-operated company that is a partner of Wave Investments. UBE Erichsen Beteiligungs GmbH, which is still a partner of Orang Utan Coffee, holds shares in coffee-related companies mainly in Germany, Switzerland, and India.

At the beginning of this year, Erichsen was elected as a global board member of the International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA).

“As marketing expert, I know the importance of branding and product innovation, sponsoring and sales support. As well, I learned about the challenges of growing organic, sustainable coffee, importing specialty coffee and optimising the communication flow between origin and roasters,” shared Erichsen. “I feel honoured to be a part of this great International Women’s Coffee Alliance.”

Mollie Harvey is a coffee apprentice at private label coffee roaster Lincoln & York. After completing her A-Levels, Mollie took a part-time job as a barista at her local Starbucks while figuring out what she wanted to do next. With no prior experience Mollie never imagined this job would lead to a career in the industry. Combining her specialist barista knowledge with skills gained during her apprenticeship, Mollie is now responsible for tasting and assessing Lincoln & York’s coffee and delivering bespoke coffee education programmes to customers which cover essential barista skills. Having completed her apprenticeship with a distinction, Mollie is now working towards becoming a Q Grader; she has taken her first set of exams and looks eagerly towards an exciting future in the coffee industry.

Elizabeth Langdon took up the position of vice chair in March 2024, having already been involved at the British Coffee Association as a member of the BCA’s arbitration and contracts committee and arbitrator.

Elizabeth has enjoyed a varied career in coffee gaining a broad perspective of both producing and consuming countries from export in Vietnam and SE Asia to importing specialty coffees in Australia, the UK and Europe. Throughout this time, she has worked on a diverse portfolio of projects from sustainability to marketing.

Since 2017 Elizabeth has worked at Equatorial Traders as a trader and marketing and communications manager.
