Women in Tea and Coffee

Tea & Coffee Trade Journal held its inaugural Women in Tea and Coffee conference in central London in 2025. This year we’re back in Holborn on 6 May 2026, for another packed day of keynote speakers from the UN FAO, Ahmad Tea and Löfbergs, and three informative panel discussions with an array of top class speakers (the full Agenda is here). There are also two top class workshops, hosted by Whittard of Chelsea and PACT Coffee, and the day is rounded out with a drinks reception.

We’re looking forward to a day of positivity, energy and enthusiasm, highlighting the importance of celebrating and empowering women in the industry.

Keynote Speakers 2026

Zahra Afshar, Head of Legal, Human Rights and Sustainability

Ahmad Tea

Zahra Afshar, Head of Legal, Human Rights and Sustainability

Ahmad Tea

Zahra Afshar is a lawyer turned sustainability leader who has dedicated her career to advancing justice – first in the courtroom, and now across global supply chains. Trained in criminal defence and human rights law, she specialised in prison law and miscarriages of justice before moving in-house to Ahmad Tea, a family-owned business exporting to over 90 countries.
As Head of Legal, Human Rights and Sustainability, Zahra now applies her analytical rigour and principled outlook to one of the world’s most complex and historic supply chains. The tea industry is still largely hand-plucked — especially by women who, since the colonial beginnings of the industry, have been marginalised. Zahra is passionate about restoring duties and progressing rights to these communities, ensuring that those who grow and harvest tea are treated with fairness and dignity.
She leads initiatives that tackle systemic inequality head-on, from closing the living wage gap for tea workers to delivering programmes which improve health, sanitation and education. Under her leadership, Ahmad Tea was honoured with the King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development in 2024, recognising its commitment to embedding people and planet at the heart of commercial growth.

Zahra has also designed and is piloting a pioneering profit-share initiative to bring visibility and value directly into the hands of those who handpick the tea – ensuring that the people who work the hardest in the value chain are recognised and rewarded.

Educated at Bristol University and the London School of Economics, and called to the Bar, Zahra brings a rare combination of legal expertise, sustainability leadership, and a deep commitment to justice. Her vision is to redefine ethical leadership in global business – proving that supply chains can be not just sustainable, but truly equitable.

Kathrine Löfberg, Chair of the Board

Löfbergs

Kathrine Löfberg, Chair of the Board

Löfbergs

Kathrine Löfberg has coffee in her veins. She is the chair of the board of Löfbergs, one of the largest family-owned coffee roasters in the Nordic countries.
The company was founded in 1906 in Sweden by her great-grandfather.
Kathrine Löfberg studied economics at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, as well as communication and marketing at Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm. She has worked in financial trading at Handelsbanken in Sweden and Luxembourg, and was also a project manager at Icon Medialab before joining Löfbergs in 1999.
At Löfbergs, she has been responsible for establishing the company in Norway. She has also served as marketing manager and director of communications, overseeing the group’s brands. Kathrine Löfberg has been part of the group management team as well. In 2015, she succeeded her father as chair of the board as part of a planned generational transition.
Kathrine Löfberg has many years of experience in board work across different companies and organisations. On the boards of International Coffee Partners (chair between 2016 and 2023), coffee&climate (chair since 2022) and the Löfberg Family Foundation, her strong interest in sustainability and her commitment to people and the environment truly come into play. Much of her work focuses on strengthening the opportunities for small-scale coffee farmers to meet the challenges of climate change and improve their living conditions.
Kathrine Löfberg’s favourite coffee is Ethiopian Sidamo, a speciality coffee with elegant spiciness, fresh acidity, and intense citrus notes.

Michele Arias, Sustainability Manager

UNEX (Guatemala) SA

Michele Arias, Sustainability Manager

UNEX (Guatemala) SA

My primary role has been as a coffee trader for 37+ years. I have also worked in specialty coffee branding, merging into social project development. For the last 10 years I have been working at the coffee exporter, UNEX in Guatemala as trader and marketing manager.

In May 2025, my role changed to sustainability manager. I had been working on sustainability activities for several years now, but factors such as climate change and farmer migration to the US and Mexico, among others made the company refocus its efforts even more, tasking me to work fully on this. My main mission now is to work with 4000+ farmers, improving their livelihoods by arranging some 15+ one-week medical brigades and 15 Recreational Centers to mitigate any risk of child labour in our supply chain, and to work with roasters such as illycaffè, Starbucks Coffee and Peet’s Coffee, among others, and to engage them in this noble work.

I co-created the Farmer Aid Initiative to procure sound alliances with partners around the world and provide education, health, and climate-smart practices for 4000 small smallholders within the coffee supply chain.

Gender equality has been in the forefront for me, and this year I identified 770 women in our coffee supply chain. I am striving to connect with women leaders in the coffee world to procure programs to: gain market access, provide medical clinics that include specially designed services and bring training and projects to diversify incomes.
